Calico Blossom

Tina

Based in the Missouri Ozarks, Tina lives on a small hobby farm with her mini horses, chickens, ducks, geese, cats, and dogs. She created Calico Blossom due to her lifelong love for animals and desire to share some useful tips which make life with animals just a little easier and a little happier. Above all, Tina believes caring for animals is good for the soul.

Breed Profile: Cochin Bantams (or Pekins)

Cochin Bantams are one of the most recognizable breeds of chicken. They are incredibly distinctive with their ball-shaped bodies, massively feathered legs, and plumed, round tails. They have short single combs and expressive little faces.

Should you keep your hens confined or free range?

The decision to keep chickens confined or allow them to roam free can be a difficult one. For some people, the choice is obvious–many cities do not allow chickens unless they are kept within small coops or chicken tractors. But for those who are allowed to let their chickens roam, they are often left wondering if they should.

Holderread Waterfowl Farm 2015 Duck Order

Holderread Waterfowl Farm has a long-standing and well-deserved reputation as breeders of high quality ducks and geese. The farm is owned by Dave Holderread, a celebrity in the duck world due to his major contributions to duck breeding and exhibition. I was very excited to order 20 Runner ducklings and 10 Welsh Harlequin ducklings from the famous farm this May.

Breed Profile: Muscovy Ducks

Muscovy ducks are a unique duck you should definitely consider adding to your homestead. They are entirely different from other domestic duck breeds, since Muscovies did not originate from Mallard ducks. Muscovies are also quite distinctive from other breeds.

Breed Profile: Light Brahma

Light Brahma are my favorite breed of chicken. They are gentle giants, lay large eggs, and are gorgeous to look at. If you want a large breed of chicken that will look stunning in your barnyard, you can’t go wrong with Light Brahmas.
